PROFIBUS is the abbreviation of Process Field Bus, which officially became the international standard of fieldbus in 1989. It occupies a dominant position in various fields of automation, and the number of device nodes in the world has exceeded 20 million. It consists of three compatible parts, namely PROFIBUS-DP (Decentralized Periphery), PROFIBUS-PA (Process Automation), and PROFIBUS-FMS (Fieldbus Message Specification). Among them, PROFIBUS-DP is applied to the field level. It is a high-speed and low-cost communication used for communication between device-level control systems and distributed I/O. The bus cycle is generally less than 10ms. It uses the protocol layer 1, 2 and user interface to ensure fast and effective data transmission. PROFIBUS-PA is suitable for process automation, which can connect sensors and actuators to a common bus and can be applied to the field of intrinsic safety. PROFIBUS-FMS is used for workshop-level monitoring networks. It is a real-time multi-master network with a token structure, which is used to complete the communication between controllers and intelligent field devices and the information exchange between controllers. It mainly uses the master-slave mode, and usually exchanges data with the transmission device periodically.
PROFIBUS, as the most widely used fieldbus technology in the industry, possesses not only the advantages typical of bus systems but also its own distinct features, which are detailed as follows:
The maximum transmission information length is 255 bytes (B), with a maximum data length of 244 bytes (B) and a typical length of 120 bytes (B).
Network topologies include linear, tree, or bus structures, with active bus terminal resistors at both ends.
Transmission speeds range from 9.6 Kb/s to 12 Mb/s, depending on the network topology and bus length.
The number of stations depends on signal characteristics; for shielded twisted pair cables, each segment supports 32 stations (without repeaters), with a maximum of 127 stations with repeaters.
Transmission media include shielded/unshielded twisted pair cables or optical fibers.
Using twisted pair cables, the maximum transmission distance is up to 9.6 km, while with optical fibers, the maximum transmission length reaches 90 km.
Transmission technologies encompass RS-485 transmission for DP and FMS, IEC 1158-2 transmission for PA, and optical fiber transmission.
Utilizes a unified bus orientation protocol, including token passing between master stations and master-slave communication between stations.
Data transmission services include cyclic and non-cyclic types.
